As we make our way to the end of 2020, this has been a year full of more challenges than I could ever imagine. And it is not over yet. It has been a year full of confusion, sadness, and a logistical nightmare for some. In our household, we faced many challenges figuring out how to virtual school and to navigate this new world at a moment’s notice. Now here we are during the holiday season. Personally, I decided to make the most of the holiday season, even with the challenges so I came up with 8 ways to have a nice Christmas during covid. To enjoy what we could and possibly make new traditions. I mean, why not, right? At this point, we really do not have anything to lose.
As I was planning things for my family, I thought that others might also be able to benefit from my ideas for having a nice Christmas during COVID. I believe that even though this holiday season is different, it still can be a wonderful time celebrating.
Here are some ideas that I plan to implement for this Christmas season (and I hope that you will too!) …
Reach out to loved ones during Christmas
This is first and foremost on my list! So many people are lonely and struggling right now, it is imperative that we reach out! And even though we cannot have “in-person” visits (to clarify, here in Virginia in December we are restricted to 10 people or less currently), we absolutely plan to reach out to all of our friends and relatives. There are many modes of reaching out. We use printed Christmas cards, phone calls, and video calls. You could even do letters. And if we want to leave gifts, we will leave them on porches. What a fun thing for them to come out and find.
Make something holiday inspired
Because of all the cancellations in 2020, we have had a bit more time on our hands which in some ways is refreshing. Take this time and make something! There are so many crafty things to make, whatever your interest. Other than crafts, you could try to make new food items. Don’t know-how, you say? Well currently there are so many different virtual classes right now during COVID, you will surely find a fun class to learn a new skill and make something! So fun
Go see some Christmas lights
We have done this item three times already! We might overdose on Christmas lights haha. But we enjoyed every trip. We saw lights at the beach, another highly technical light show, and then rode around with our boys and some hot chocolate to explore an entire street in our town that has more Christmas lights than we can imagine. Wherever you are, hop in your car and go find some lights! It will instantly cheer up your Christmas during COVID.
Holiday Video calls
This is an extension of item #1. We use video calls to reach out to loved ones so that they can see our faces which I think is so important in combatting loneliness. I do not know a person ever that wants to be forgotten about, so get on that video call and be the person to let them know that they are not. Make these calls Christmas themed and make them fun! Put on your Christmas hat and have a good chat!
Show appreciation
Christmas during COVID is a perfect time to show appreciation to others who serve your community. Healthcare workers, postal workers, delivery people, teachers…the list goes on. There are so many ways to show appreciation such as thank you notes and gifts, or just a simple thank you. Pick just one to get started and show someone that you care.
Random acts of kindness especially during COVID
At Christmas, I call this “Santa training”. A random act of kindness to help someone that you do not know. So many people are having hardships during this pandemic and it could not be a better time for some random acts of kindness. It can but does not have to cost a thing to do something nice for a stranger. And it could mean the world to them to know that someone cares.
Gratitude all year long
This is such an important thing to do, and never more important than now. Yes, it has been a hard year. But as hard as yours has been, there are still things to be thankful for. Take time to be thankful and acknowledge those good things that you have and with the bad things, maybe it is possible to be thankful for the lesson that came with it. This year during COVID has personally brought many lessons for our family and I try to take them in and learn from the experience. I hope that you can find things to be grateful for too.
Christmas movies
Now the most fun suggestion!!! I LOVE Christmas movies. Yes, I do watch the same movies year after year. There are so many! Christmas Vacation, Elf, Christmas Story, Deck the Halls, Four Christmases, Bad Moms Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, Home Alone…those are some of my favorites! All you need is a couch, TV, and snuggly blanket. It is such a great day. If you really want to go all out, use the “making things” suggestion, and make some cookies to go with your movies.
These are just a few ideas to have a nice Christmas, even during COVID. Most of these ideas need little to no money, so that will not be a problem. If you are interested in saving money for next year’s holiday season, check out my post on why you should have a Christmas club that will show you exactly how.
Yes, this year will be different than what you are used to. And yes, it can still be fun. We can still be thankful, joyful, and be there for others even if it is not in person. And being there for others will help you as well.
Spreading goodness in the world can help our world to return to normalcy and make it even better. Spend this holiday season doing that! Use this time to recharge, reach out, create, get inspired and get connected! I hope that these suggestions inspire you to have a nice Christmas during COVID. And even more than that, I wish you a happy new year and hope for better things to come.
